Walt Disney World Recipes

Recipe From The Boardwalk Bakery At Disney's Boardwalk Resort

Boardwalk Bakery Chocolate Pretzels

These Boardwalk Bakery Chocolate Pretzels have been my favorite Disney snack since my very first trip. Although I said snack, it was usually my breakfast. Over the years, these pretzels have gone on and off the menu. However, it’s been a very long time since they’ve been back.

Since I was not always able to get them, we found the recipe and started make these Boardwalk Bakery Chocolate Pretzels at home. In fact, this was the very first Disney recipe we made at home.

It was Christmas time, and as much as we wanted to go to Disney World, we couldn’t. So we brought Disney World home with a twist–a pretzel twist!

Since it was Christmas, we cut each pretzel rope in half and made these great Chocolate Candy Cane Christmas cookies!

Boardwalk Bakery Chocolate Pretzels

Ingredients

  • 2 sheets of puff pastry dough
  • 2 cups butter, softened
  • 2 ½ cups powdered sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 eggs
  • 5 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons baking powder
  • 2/3 cup cocoa powder
  • Water, to brush the pretzels

Instructions

Chocolate dough:
  1. Sift the flour, baking powder, and cocoa powder together and set aside.
  2. In the bowl of a stand mixer with the paddle attachment, cream the butter, sugar, and salt. Add in vanilla.
  3. Add in the eggs, one at a time. Scrape down sides of bowl as needed.
  4. Add the dry ingredients and mix on low speed until a soft dough forms.
Make Pretzels:
    1. Lay out one sheet of puff pastry.
    2. Evenly spread chocolate dough onto the puff pastry sheet, covering completely. Spread it to the edges and make it flat.
    3. Place second sheet of puff pasty on top of the dough.
    4. Place this dough “sandwich” in the refrigerator for 45-60 minutes.
    5. After chilling, cut dough into ¾” strips. You should get 14 strips.
    6. Roll strips by hand until the strips are 24 inches long. Twist to form candy cane appearance.
    7. Twist into pretzel shapes.
    8. Place pretzels on a baking sheet. Lightly brush the pretzels with water and sprinkle with coarse sugar. The water makes the sugar stick.
    9. Bake in 350-degree oven for 25-27 minutes. The pretzels will be light in color. The bottom will be light brown.
    10. Cool completely and serve.

DISNEY BOARDWALK BAKERY RECIPE TIP:

You may need to gently press in the edges of the dough and puff pastry because the bottom puff pastry may stretch while spreading the chocolate dough.

To make candy canes cut the dough strips in half and roll each one to 10 inches. Shape into candy cane. The rest of the steps are the same.
