Cream Cheese and Guava-Stuffed French Toast

Guava is one of my absolute favorite flavors. I was not able to taste this Cream Cheese and Guava-Stuffed French Toast yet in person, but we made it at home. All I can say is…OMG!

I can’t tell if it’s breakfast disguised as dessert or dessert for breakfast. But either way, I loved it!

It is very rich and creamy. The strawberries give it a wonderful freshness to balance the richness. And the guava is just yum!

Cream Cheese and Guava-Stuffed French Toast

Ingredients

Cream Cheese Icing
  • ½ cup cream cheese, softened
  • ¼ cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream
Cream Cheese Filling
  • 1 (8 oz) package cream cheese, softened
  • ½ powdered sugar
Guava Sauce
  • 1 cup guava paste, cut into cubes
  • ¾ cup water
Egg Custard
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
French Toast
    • 1 tablespoon butter
    • 8 slices brioche, cut into ¾ inch thick slices
    • 8-12 slices guava paste (depending on the thickness or your guava paste), cut into ¼ inch thick strips
    • Strawberries

Instructions

For Cream Cheese Icing
  1. With an electric or hand mixer, whip cream cheese until smooth.
  2. Add powdered sugar and beat until fluffy.
  3. Add heavy cream and whip until smooth.
  4. Set aside.
For Cream Cheese Filling
  1. With an electric or hand mixer, whip cream cheese until smooth.
  2. Add powdered sugar and beat until fluffy.
  3. Set aside.
For Guava Sauce
  1. Place water and cubed guava paste in a small saucepan over medium low heat.
  2. Cook, stirring occasionally for 10 minutes. The guava paste will melt and make a thick sauce.
  3. Serve warm.

For Egg Custard

  1. Whisk eggs, milk, heavy cream, and vanilla until smooth. Set aside.
  2. *This can be done in in a blender to make it extra smooth.

For French Toast

  1. Melt a little butter in a large pan over medium heat.
  2. Dip 2 slices of bread into the egg custard. Just a few seconds on each side is enough.
  3. Place dipped bread on to pan.
  4. Cook the first side until golden, about 2 minutes. Flip.
  5. On one slice of bread place 2-3 slices of guava paste. On the other slice of bread place ¼ of the cream cheese filling mixture.
  6. Decrease heat to low. Allow slices to cook for another minute until golden brown.
  7. Once golden, place the cream cheese side of bread onto the guava side to make a sandwich. Cook for another minute.
  8. Put on a plate and drizzle with cream cheese icing and guava sauce.
  9. Garnish with sliced strawberries.

RECIPE TIP: The cream cheese icing and filling can me made ahead and stored in the refrigerator.

Although this recipe states is serves 4, it seems to make enough cream cheese icing and guava sauce for at least 8 sandwiches. The filling can stretch to 8 sandwiches too, so long as you do not overstuff them (which is tempting to do).
